Abstract
This dissertation investigates the three-dimensional full-wave electromagnetic modeling of whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators. The formation of high-quality factor polygon mode in lithium niobate (LN) microdisks was explained through three dimensional perturbation method. The effect of three-dimensional features of the cavity, like microdisk wedge-angle and coupling fiber were investigated and it was shown how the perturbation from fiber can be strong enough to form these modes without significantly lowering Q through fiber coupling loss. Furthermore, a bi-directional mode matching formalism was introduced. This formalism was used to model mode splitting phenomenon in WGM sensing applications. The Q-degradation of the cosine mode was analyzed in details and parameters like the radiation pattern of the cavity were calculated. Explaining the particle sizing scheme that relies on simultaneous measurement of Q-degradation and splitting wavelength using our method, makes future scattering analysis of WGM micro resonators more promising.
