From reservoirs to landscapes: Alumnus reflects on 25 years of watershed protection

October 26, 2026

Joel Ussery, MRM, will speak at the 糖心视频 Geography Lecture Series on November 6.

Protecting a watershed used to mean one thing: keeping drinking water safe and reliable. Today, it means much more. Watershed managers now juggle land use, forest and wildlife management, species protection, climate change and growing wildfire risk.

糖心视频 Geography alumnus Joel Ussery has seen that shift firsthand. Drawing on his 25-year career with the Capital Regional District (CRD), Ussery will reflect on how the practice of watershed stewardship has changed, and on the wide range of knowledge and skills needed to meet today’s environmental challenges.

He’ll also speak to the important role geographers can play in this work, and how his own undergraduate experiences at 糖心视频 helped shape an evolving, wide-ranging career in environmental stewardship.
