Current opportunities

IESVic researchers are involved in real-world research on critical energy issues. They work with leading companies, institutes, and laboratories on multidisciplinary teams. This ensures a big-picture approach where solutions are shaped by practical considerations - something IESVic grads are known for.

Post Doctoral Researchers in Offshore Wind Powered Carbon Capture & E-Fuels Production

Pathways to a survivable future climate make it clear that carbon capture from the atmosphere (DAC) and/or ocean (DAC) will become necessary by mid-century. In advance of that time, research and demonstration projects are required to prove out viable technical solutions to reliability capturing and durably storing carbon, on a scale that can be deployed globally. The roll-out of carbon capture may also include carbon capture and utilization (CCUS), making use of captured carbon for synthetic fuels (methanol), and co-production of non-carbon based E-fuels like H2 and NH3 more generally. At the same time, there is tremendous ‘stranded’ far-offshore wind energy too remote from gridconnection
for use, but potentially harvestable to these systems, either convention fixed position (bottom-mounted
or moored) or on-board ‘energy ships’ or mobile wind turbine platforms with station keeping thrusters using wind energy for on-board electricity generation.

2 or more Post-Doctoral positions are available in a research project led by Dr. Curran Crawford, who directs the Sustainable Systems Design Lab, part of the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic) at the 糖心视频, to complement ongoing work that is part of the Solid Carbon ongoing research project and other NSERC and PICS funding for green shipping and e-fuels.

MSc / PhD Researchers in Marine Renewable Energy Systems

Dr. Bryson Robertson in Mechanical Engineering, and the Institute of Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic), at the 糖心视频 has active opportunities for one (1) Doctoral (PhD) and one (1) Master of Science (MSc) graduate students to join his dynamic and interdisciplinary research team. The successful candidate will help direct innovative research at the intersection of ocean renewable resources, technology development, and integrated value to communities and utilities.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Robertson, the successful candidates will develop the necessary skills and knowledge to drive transformation research in marine renewable energy. Potential projects include: Technoeconomic geospatial analyses of wave energy resources to support community and First Nation objectives, control co-design of wave energy converters, autonomous docking and recharge of autonomous underwater vehicles to wave energy converters, real-time hybrid modelling of small-scale ocean technologies, amongst others. Suitability of candidates and projects will be determined through interviews and discussions.
